Important Notice: Trial ADU Fee Waiver Program Ending Soon

The County of San Diego's trial impact fee waiver, effective from January 9, 2019, is approaching its conclusion on January 9, 2024. This trial waiver, aimed at encouraging ADU projects, offers waived plan check fees for projects initiated before January 9, 2024. Remember, permit and other impact fees are collected at project issuance and will not be covered if the permit is issued post this deadline. If your project is under review, we urge you to work closely with your design team to meet the necessary deadlines. For queries or concerns, please contact us at aduquestions@sdcounty.ca.gov.

Understanding ADUs and JADUs

ADUs are independent living units, either detached or attached, that exist on the same legal lot as your primary dwelling. Similarly, Junior Accessory Dwelling Units (JADUs) are smaller, self-contained units within an existing residence. Both offer viable options for expanding living space and contributing to affordable housing solutions.

Permit Requirements and Size Limitations

Building permits are mandatory for ADU construction to ensure compliance with local zoning, building, and safety codes. ADUs must be secondary in size to the primary residence, with specific size limitations based on the size of your existing single-family dwelling.
